Why Northwest Washington livestock producers should be watching an expanding tick

For generations, Washington ranchers have dealt with ticks as part of working livestock and managing pasture.

But a different tick is getting increasing attention across the United States.

It is called the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum), named for the distinctive white spot found on the back of the adult female.

Historically associated with the southeastern and south-central United States, the Lone Star tick has demonstrated the ability to expand its geographic range. Researchers are now studying its movement, host-seeking behavior, and ability to survive under different environmental conditions.

That raises an important question for Washington cattle producers:

Could the Lone Star tick become a problem in Washington?

The answer today requires some nuance.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, the Lone Star tick is not native to Washington, and neither the Lone Star tick nor the black-legged tick that transmits ehrlichiosis is considered established in the state. Washington has not reported a human case of ehrlichiosis acquired within the state, and bacteria that cause ehrlichiosis have not been detected in ticks collected in Washington.

So this isn't a story about a tick that has suddenly taken over Washington.

It is a story about why ranchers should pay attention to changing tick distributions before a problem becomes established.

Washington Already Has Ticks

It is important to begin with what we already know.

Ticks are common throughout Washington State.

The Washington State Department of Health tracks tick species submitted by the public and uses those submissions to better understand where different species occur and how tick activity changes over time.

Washington's existing tick concerns include species such as the western black-legged tick, western dog tick, and Rocky Mountain wood tick.

The western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus) is particularly important in western Washington. It can transmit Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, and it occurs in western Washington and along the eastern slopes of the Cascades.

In other words, Washington ranchers don't need to wait for the Lone Star tick to think about tick management.

Ticks are already part of the agricultural landscape.

The question is whether additional species could establish themselves as environmental conditions and host populations change.

Why Is the Lone Star Tick Getting Attention?

The Lone Star tick is different from many of the ticks people are accustomed to encountering.

It is a highly mobile, aggressive host-seeking tick.

Rather than simply waiting on vegetation for a host to brush past, Lone Star ticks can actively move in search of a host.

That behavior is receiving significant scientific attention.

A 2025 Washington State University doctoral dissertation examined the movement, detection, abundance, and environmental factors affecting Amblyomma americanum. The research found that Lone Star ticks can be highly mobile and that temperature and previous environmental conditions influence their host-seeking behavior and detection.

That matters because a tick doesn't need to be sitting in one location waiting for cattle to walk through.

It can move.

And its hosts move even farther.

Cattle Are Part of the Equation

A ranch is an ecosystem.

Cattle interact with pasture.

Deer move through fence lines.

Coyotes, rodents, birds, dogs, and other wildlife move across the landscape.

People travel between properties.

Livestock are bought, sold, transported, and moved between states.

All of these movements create opportunities for parasites to encounter new hosts.

The Lone Star tick has a broad host range, and cattle can serve as hosts.

That makes the species relevant to livestock producers even if its primary importance in a particular region is not yet established.

The Deer Connection

One animal deserves particular attention:

the white-tailed deer.

Deer are important hosts in Lone Star tick ecology.

This illustrates why controlling ticks is not simply a matter of treating cattle.

You can treat a herd and still have ticks in the surrounding environment.

Wildlife can continue moving through the same pasture.

This is why a long-term tick strategy requires attention to the entire ranch landscape.

What Could Heavy Tick Pressure Do to Cattle?

Ticks are parasites.

They feed on blood and can cause irritation and stress.

When tick burdens become substantial, the effects can extend beyond a nuisance.

Potential consequences include:

  • Blood loss
  • Skin irritation
  • Stress
  • Reduced body condition
  • Reduced weight gain
  • Increased susceptibility to secondary problems
  • Increased labor
  • Increased parasite-control expenses
  • Transmission of certain pathogens

The economic importance of ticks is therefore not necessarily tied to one dramatic disease outbreak.

Sometimes the economic impact comes from many smaller losses accumulating over an entire production season.

The Washington Climate Question

Could Washington's environment support the Lone Star tick?

That is precisely the type of question scientists are investigating.

Researchers at Washington State University have studied the Lone Star tick's response to temperature and environmental conditions. Their work demonstrates that temperature history can affect tick behavior and detection.

But it would be a mistake to take that research and conclude that Washington is now experiencing a widespread Lone Star tick invasion.

We don't have evidence for that.

The responsible conclusion is more straightforward:

Changing environmental conditions make continued surveillance worthwhile.

Why Skagit Valley Should Pay Attention

Skagit Valley is an agricultural landscape unlike many parts of Washington.

It contains:

  • Dairy farms
  • Beef cattle operations
  • Pasture
  • Cropland
  • Woodlands
  • Wetlands
  • River corridors
  • Wildlife habitat
  • Rural residential development

That combination creates a complicated interaction between livestock, wildlife, vegetation, and people.

For cattle producers, the practical lesson isn't to start treating every pasture for Lone Star ticks.

It is to know what is already present.

If an unusual tick appears on cattle, dogs, wildlife, or people, identifying the species can help determine whether something unusual is occurring.

Ranchers Can Become the Early Warning System

This is where farmers and ranchers can make a real contribution.

Researchers cannot be everywhere.

But ranchers are.

They are checking cattle every day.

They are repairing fences.

They are walking pastures.

They are moving livestock.

They are working around brush and timber.

They are seeing wildlife.

That makes agricultural producers an important source of information about changes in parasite populations.

The Washington State Department of Health specifically encourages people to submit ticks for identification because doing so helps track species distribution and seasonal activity.

If you find an unfamiliar tick, don't automatically throw it away.

Save it. Photograph it. Record where you found it.

Those simple actions can provide useful information.

What Should a Washington Rancher Look For?

The adult female Lone Star tick has one of the easiest identifying characteristics among common tick species:

A single white spot on its back.

But appearances can be deceptive, particularly with immature ticks.

If you aren't certain what species you have found, don't rely on a quick internet search.

Have it identified.

The Washington State Department of Health accepts ticks for species identification and provides instructions for submitting specimens.

A Simple Ranch Tick-Surveillance Program

A ranch doesn't need a laboratory to start paying attention.

A simple observation program can begin with four steps.

1. Inspect the cattle

During normal handling, look for ticks around:

  • Ears
  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Tailhead
  • Flank
  • Groin
  • Udder
  • Other areas where ticks may attach

2. Check working dogs

Dogs can encounter ticks while traveling through pasture, brush, and wildlife habitat.

3. Watch wildlife activity

Pay particular attention to areas where deer concentrate.

4. Document unusual findings

Record:

  • Date
  • Location
  • Animal
  • Number of ticks
  • Photograph
  • Approximate size
  • Whether the tick was attached

That information can become valuable if unusual tick activity appears repeatedly.

Don't Overreact

There is an important difference between surveillance and panic.

Finding one unfamiliar tick does not mean a new tick population has established itself.

Likewise, finding a Lone Star tick does not automatically mean that a person or animal has contracted a disease.

The Washington Department of Health currently reports that ehrlichiosis has not been acquired locally in Washington and that ehrlichiosis-causing bacteria have not been detected in ticks collected in the state.

That is good news.

But it is also a reason to continue watching.

Early detection is much easier than dealing with an established parasite population.

What About Alpha-Gal?

The Lone Star tick has also become widely known because of its association with alpha-gal syndrome, a condition in which some people develop an allergy to the carbohydrate alpha-gal found in mammalian products.

This subject requires particular caution in Washington.

A 2025 CDC-published case report documented alpha-gal syndrome in a Washington resident, but the tick submitted in that case was identified as a western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus), not a Lone Star tick. The authors noted that the relationship between alpha-gal syndrome and tick species outside the established Lone Star range remains uncertain.

Therefore, it would be inaccurate to tell Washington consumers that Lone Star ticks are responsible for a growing local alpha-gal problem.

The science is more complicated than that.

The Bigger Agricultural Lesson

The Lone Star tick illustrates something larger about modern agriculture:

The biological boundaries of our farms are not the same as our fence lines.

Parasites don't recognize property boundaries.

Wildlife doesn't recognize county lines.

Ticks don't care whether a field belongs to a cattle rancher, dairy farmer, timber company, or homeowner.

And livestock movement connects agricultural communities across state lines.

That means biosecurity isn't simply about keeping diseases out of the herd.

It is also about understanding what is happening in the surrounding ecosystem.

Good Ranch Management Includes Observation

The best defense against emerging agricultural problems is often not a complicated technology.

It is observation.

Know your cattle.

Know your pasture.

Know the wildlife that moves through it.

Know what parasites are normally present.

And pay attention when something changes.

The Lone Star tick may or may not become an established agricultural concern in Washington.

Right now, there is no evidence that it has become widespread here.

But its changing distribution elsewhere and the continued research into its biology give ranchers a good reason to keep watching.

Keep an Eye on the Pasture

The Lone Star tick isn't a reason to panic in Skagit Valley.

It is a reason to pay attention.

Washington already has a diverse tick population, and the state maintains surveillance because different tick species carry different risks.

For cattle producers, the best approach is simple:

Inspect. Identify. Document. Report.

If an unusual tick shows up on cattle, a dog, wildlife, or yourself, don't dismiss it.

Take a picture.

Save the specimen when practical.

Record where it was found.

And have it properly identified.

Agricultural producers are often the first people to notice changes in the landscape.

That makes every rancher part of Washington's early-warning system.

The Lone Star tick may be moving north.

Whether it ever becomes established in Washington remains to be seen.

But the time to start watching is before it becomes a problem—not after.

Meat Imports, Reinspection, and Recalls: Is the U.S. System Catching Every Problem?

Americans have always cared about where their food comes from. But in 2026, that question has become increasingly important as the United States relies on a complex international supply chain to meet consumer demand for meat. Imported beef, pork, and other meat products can travel thousands of miles, pass through multiple companies, enter U.S. ports, undergo inspection, and ultimately arrive at an American grocery store or restaurant. The system is designed to protect consumers. But an important question remains: How effective is reinspection when problems are discovered only after imported meat has already entered commerce? The answer is not that imported meat is inherently unsafe. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has a substantial import-inspection system. Every shipment of regulated imported meat offered for commercial entry must undergo FSIS reinspection at an approved import inspection facility. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) The bigger issue is understanding what reinspection can—and cannot—do. How Imported Meat Enters the United States Imported meat does not simply arrive at a U.S. port and automatically enter the American food supply. Before meat can be imported, the exporting country's inspection system must be determined by FSIS to provide protections equivalent to those of the United States. Imported products must come from eligible countries and certified foreign establishments. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) Once a shipment reaches the United States, FSIS performs import reinspection. Inspectors verify documentation and certification, examine general product condition and labeling, and conduct additional inspections or laboratory testing according to the inspection system. Tests can involve microbiological contamination, chemical residues, species identification, product composition, and other concerns. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) In other words, there is an important safeguard between a foreign processing plant and the American consumer. But that safeguard is based partly on sampling. And sampling creates an unavoidable limitation. Reinspection Is Not the Same as Inspecting Every Pound One of the most misunderstood aspects of imported meat inspection is the difference between reinspection of a shipment and inspection of every individual package. FSIS uses its Public Health Information System (PHIS) to assign inspection activities based on factors including the compliance history of the foreign establishment and country. Depending on the circumstances, inspections can involve document review, physical examination, labeling verification, and laboratory testing. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) Some testing is statistical. That means inspectors select samples from a larger lot. A sample can provide important information about a shipment, but it cannot literally examine every piece of meat. This is a fundamental principle of modern food inspection: testing can reduce risk, but it cannot eliminate uncertainty. What Happens When Imported Meat Fails Inspection? When imported product fails an FSIS inspection, it can be refused entry. FSIS explains that products that fail inspection can be refused entry, and depending on the circumstances, refused product must be re-exported, destroyed, or converted to non-human food when legally permitted. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) The system can also increase scrutiny. FSIS's inspection procedures provide for intensified reinspection when an inspection assignment fails. In other words, a failure can trigger greater scrutiny of subsequent shipments from the same establishment or product category. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) That is an important feature of the system. A foreign processor with a history of problems does not necessarily continue operating under exactly the same level of scrutiny. Its history can affect the inspection process going forward. But What If the Problem Is Found After the Meat Enters Commerce? This is where the issue becomes more complicated. Not every food-safety problem is necessarily detectable during a port-of-entry inspection. Some problems can be discovered through laboratory testing. Others may become apparent through subsequent testing, consumer complaints, epidemiological investigations, company quality-control programs, or information received from another government agency. When adulterated or misbranded meat has already entered commerce, a recall may become necessary. FSIS describes a recall as a voluntary action by a company to remove adulterated or misbranded product from commerce. Official establishments are required to maintain recall plans and notify FSIS within 24 hours after becoming aware that adulterated or misbranded product entered commerce. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) That means a recall is not necessarily evidence that inspection failed. Sometimes it demonstrates that the broader food-safety system identified a problem after the product had already passed an earlier checkpoint. But it also illustrates a fundamental vulnerability: Once meat has entered a large distribution network, identifying and recovering every affected package becomes much more difficult. Traceability Becomes Critical Imagine a shipment of imported beef enters the country. It moves from an importer to a distributor. The distributor sends product to several regional warehouses. Those warehouses supply restaurants, grocery stores, institutions, and other distributors. By the time a problem is discovered, the original shipment may have been divided among hundreds of customers. That is why traceability is so important. A recall depends on being able to identify: The producing establishmentThe importerThe production dateThe lot or batchThe product descriptionDistribution pointsRetail or food-service customersUltimately, where the affected product may have gone The more complicated the supply chain becomes, the more difficult a recall can become. The Problem of "Invisible" Failures There is another issue worth discussing. Some meat problems are obvious. A damaged package may be rejected. A mislabeled product may be caught. A foreign object may be discovered during physical inspection. But other problems are much harder to identify visually. Chemical residues, pathogens, species substitution, and certain forms of adulteration can require laboratory analysis or information that isn't available simply by looking at a shipment. FSIS's import-reinspection procedures specifically provide for laboratory sampling involving microbiological contamination, residues, species, and other characteristics. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) This is one reason the public should understand that "USDA inspected" does not mean that every individual piece of meat has been individually laboratory tested. It means the product has entered a regulatory inspection system. That distinction matters. The China Example Shows Why Controls Matter One of the clearest examples of why import controls exist occurred when FSIS issued a public health alert concerning meat and poultry products from China that were ineligible for import and had not been presented to FSIS for import reinspection. FSIS reported that the products did not identify an eligible establishment number and had not been presented for required import reinspection. The agency worked with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service during the investigation. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) This is an important distinction. The problem wasn't simply that a shipment failed a routine inspection. The problem was that certain product had bypassed the required inspection process altogether. That illustrates why border controls, certification, importer accountability, traceability, and inspection all matter. Recalls Are a Safety Mechanism—But They Are Also a Warning It is tempting to look at a meat recall and conclude: "The inspection system doesn't work." That conclusion is too simplistic. A recall can actually demonstrate that the regulatory system is functioning as intended: a problem is identified, affected product is traced, and consumers are warned. But recalls also tell us something else. They demonstrate that no inspection system can provide absolute certainty. The goal is risk reduction. And when a problem escapes an earlier control, the system must have enough surveillance and traceability to find it before the consequences become greater. Imported Beef Versus Domestic Beef This conversation should not become an argument that foreign beef is automatically unsafe. That would be misleading. The United States permits imports from countries whose meat-inspection systems have been determined to provide equivalent levels of public-health protection. Imported product is subject to FSIS reinspection before entering U.S. commerce. (Food Safety and Inspection Service) The better question is: How much complexity exists between the producer and the consumer? A domestic regional producer may have a much shorter chain: Farm → Processor → Distributor/Retailer → Consumer An international supply chain may involve: Foreign Farm → Foreign Processor → Exporter → International Transportation → U.S. Importer → U.S. Inspection → Distributor → Warehouse → Retailer/Restaurant → Consumer Neither supply chain automatically guarantees safety or quality. But the longer and more complicated the chain becomes, the more important traceability, accountability, documentation, and communication become. Why Local Beef Has an Important Advantage This is where local beef producers have an opportunity that has little to do with competing against imported meat on price. The advantage is proximity. When cattle are raised and processed within a regional supply chain, the producer can often provide consumers with a much clearer story about where the animal originated and who was responsible for raising it. It doesn't eliminate food-safety responsibilities. And it doesn't mean local beef is automatically superior simply because it is local. What it does provide is something increasingly valuable to consumers: A shorter connection between the rancher and the person eating the beef. The Real Question Is Trust The future of the American meat industry will not be determined solely by whether beef comes from Washington, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, or another country. Consumers are increasingly asking deeper questions: Who raised it? Where was it processed? Who inspected it? How did it get here? Can the product be traced? What happens if something goes wrong? Can someone stand behind the product? Those are legitimate questions. And the beef industry should welcome them. A strong food system isn't one in which consumers are told not to ask questions. It is one in which producers, processors, importers, regulators, retailers, and ranchers can answer them. Imported Meat Requires Strong Oversight Imported meat is an important part of the American food supply, and the United States has a substantial regulatory framework governing its entry. But the existence of an inspection system doesn't mean we should stop examining how that system works. Reinspection relies partly on statistical sampling. Recalls can occur after products enter commerce. Supply chains can be complicated. Traceability can become difficult when product moves through multiple businesses. And failures—whether involving food safety, labeling, eligibility, or documentation—demonstrate why continued oversight is necessary. The goal shouldn't be to create fear about imported meat. The goal should be transparency and accountability. Consumers deserve to know where their meat comes from. They deserve to understand how it was inspected. And they deserve confidence that when a problem is discovered, the industry and regulators can quickly identify the affected product and get it out of the food supply. Know Your Beef. Know Your Source. In an increasingly complicated global food system, knowing the source of your food has real value. When you purchase locally raised beef, you're not simply buying a package of meat. You're buying into a relationship with a producer and a regional food system. Opening the Border to Mexican Cattle: The Screwworm Question American Ranchers Cannot Ignore

As the United States prepares to resume limited cattle imports from Mexico, producers are asking an important question: How much risk are we willing to accept to increase cattle supply? For American cattle producers, few words carry more weight than biosecurity. A disease or parasite that enters a herd can change the economics of a ranch overnight. What begins as an isolated case can become a regional problem, requiring quarantine, treatment, movement restrictions, surveillance, and potentially enormous public and private expenditures. That is why the USDA's decision to begin reopening the southern border to Mexican cattle deserves careful attention. The issue is not whether Mexican cattle are inherently unsafe. They are not. The issue is whether New World screwworm, an aggressive livestock parasite that remains active in Mexico, can be kept from gaining a permanent foothold in the United States as cross-border livestock movement resumes. And that is a question every American cattle producer has a stake in. What Is New World Screwworm? New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is not an ordinary nuisance fly. It is a serious livestock pest. The adult fly lays eggs in wounds or other breaks in the skin of warm-blooded animals. The larvae then burrow into living tissue and feed on the animal. Unlike ordinary maggots found in dead tissue, screwworm larvae attack living tissue. The resulting infestation, known as myiasis, can cause severe wounds, suffering, secondary infection, reduced productivity, and death if untreated. The USDA considers New World screwworm a serious threat to livestock, wildlife, pets, and, more rarely, humans. For cattle producers, that makes the parasite more than an animal-health concern. It is an economic concern. How Did Screwworm Reach Mexico? The current outbreak began moving northward through Central America before reaching Mexico. Mexico notified USDA in November 2024 of a New World screwworm detection in cattle in Chiapas. Since then, the parasite has continued moving northward through Mexico despite eradication and containment efforts. In September 2025, Mexico confirmed a case in Nuevo León, less than 70 miles from the U.S. border. USDA described that detection as particularly concerning because of the region's proximity to major livestock and commercial transportation routes. The threat has not disappeared. In fact, USDA's current status information continues to track active cases in Mexico and describes the effort to prevent further northward movement of the parasite. The United States Has Already Seen Screwworm This is perhaps the most important development for American cattle producers. The concern is no longer theoretical. On June 3, 2026, USDA confirmed New World screwworm in a calf in Zavala County, Texas. USDA subsequently confirmed additional U.S. detections, including another calf and a dog in Texas. That means the United States has already experienced incursions of the parasite. The question now becomes: Can those detections be contained and eliminated before screwworm establishes itself as a permanent pest in the United States? That is a very different question from whether the United States can simply inspect cattle at the border. Why the Border Matters The United States and Mexico have a long-established cattle trade. Mexico has traditionally been one of America's most important sources of imported cattle. USDA's Economic Research Service reports that Mexico supplied approximately 62% of U.S. cattle imports from 2020 through 2024, with most of those animals being lighter-weight cattle destined for U.S. stocker or feeder operations. The cattle trade therefore matters to both countries. American feedlots depend upon cattle supplies. Mexican producers depend upon access to American markets. U.S. consumers depend upon a functioning beef supply chain. And American ranchers operate within the same interconnected market. The challenge is finding the balance between maintaining that trade and preventing a destructive livestock pest from becoming established. USDA Is Reopening the Border—But Not Without Conditions USDA is not simply throwing open the border. The agency has announced a phased reopening. Beginning August 24, 2026, USDA plans to reopen the Douglas, Arizona port of entry to cattle trade, while preparing for subsequent openings at Santa Teresa and Columbus, New Mexico. The reopening is contingent upon Mexico's adherence to the Joint Action Plan. USDA says every animal entering through the reopened ports will receive a full inspection for signs of New World screwworm. USDA also identifies Sonora and Chihuahua as lower-risk Mexican states because of their inspection programs and geographic distance from the areas where most cases are concentrated. Those safeguards are significant. But they do not make the underlying biological risk disappear. Inspection Is Essential—but It Is Not the Same as Eradication This distinction deserves attention. A border inspection is designed to identify infected or suspect animals. But New World screwworm is an organism with a reproductive cycle. The larger goal is not merely to prevent visibly infected cattle from crossing the border. The goal is to prevent the establishment of a self-sustaining population. That requires multiple layers of defense: Animal inspectionTreatmentMovement controlsSurveillanceRapid reportingSterile fly releasesTraceabilityWound managementVeterinary responseInternational cooperation USDA has invested heavily in sterile-fly technology because disrupting reproduction is one of the most important tools available against screwworm. In January 2026, USDA announced that it was dispersing approximately 100 million sterile flies per week as part of its effort to defend the U.S. border. The scale of that operation illustrates the seriousness of the threat. Why Sterile Flies Matter The screwworm eradication program is one of the more remarkable examples of agricultural biotechnology. Male flies are sterilized and released into the environment. They compete with fertile males for females. When a sterile male mates with a female, reproduction is disrupted. Repeated releases can dramatically reduce the reproductive potential of the wild population. The strategy has historically been an important part of screwworm eradication efforts in North and Central America. But sterile flies work best as part of a broader control system. They don't replace inspection. They don't replace veterinary surveillance. They don't replace responsible livestock movement. They work alongside them. The Economic Stakes Are Enormous Imagine a screwworm population becoming established in the southern United States. The consequences would extend far beyond the animals directly infected. The cattle industry is interconnected. A parasite established in one region can affect livestock movement, feeder-cattle markets, slaughter facilities, transportation, and ultimately consumers throughout the country. What Does This Mean for Washington Ranchers? A cattle producer in Skagit Valley might reasonably ask: Why should I care about a parasite problem on the Mexican border? Because the American cattle industry is one interconnected system. Washington cattle are sold into regional and national markets. Feeder cattle move between states.
